No more weather in DIN Time for Pebble

Yahoo has recently announced it will stop providing its weather data as a free service. This will eventually result in weather in DIN Time for Pebbles to stop displaying.

Since the Pebble platform, in my view, has no future and other weather providers are either costly or doesn’t provide the necessary data this can be seen as the final nail in the coffin for DIN Time for Pebbles.

Enjoy the weather while it lasts. You can still continue to use DIN Time without weather data in the future by disabling weather it in the settings.

DIN Time and the demise of Pebble part 2

In a post in 2016 I wrote I will try to keep DIN Time running on Pebble watches for as long as possible. I’ve gotten questions about making DIN Time work with Gadgetbridge and/or Rebble. To be honest I have mentally moved on from the Pebble platform and my focus is now on developing DIN Time for Fitbit devices. I don’t want to say Gadgetbridge/Rebble will never happen, I just don’t find it very likely at the moment. Perhaps when Gadgetbridge/Rebble has matured a bit I will look into it.

And to save everyone from asking the question again: No, I am not prepared to open-source DIN Time.

DIN Time and the demise of Pebble

With the recent news that Pebble will, and have, ceased to exist as a company I just wanted to make this clear. My intention is to continue to keep DIN Time and MonDIN running on your Pebble watches for as long as possible.

MonDIN 1.5 – now with settings!

mondin15MonDIN 1.5, available now exclusively for the Pebble Time Round, adds settings page with options for seconds, date display colors and more.

The settings page use the new Pebble Clay config framework which allows the settings page to be offline, stored only on the phone.

MonDIN was initially created for my personal use when I first got the Pebble Time Round, in an attempt to mimic the Mondaine watches. It has seconds, date (in DIN Engschrift, of course) and Bluetooth disconnection warning with vibration and visual alert. And a discrete shadow under the hands, to give it a little depth.

DIN Time 2.60 adds health and more weather data

DINTime_260

Version 2.60 of DIN Time, available now, finally adds health data (on supported devices) to DIN Time, along with more weather data!

To see extended weather and health data you need to shake your watch, twice. Just like when you would activate the backlight by motion, if you have that option enabled. And then once more. You will then see a popup with lots of tiny icons and data! Please see the help screen in the settings page for more information about what the symbols and values represent.

I realize many of you would rather see their health data on the main screen, but that will have to wait until a later version.

Other changes in this version include:

  • Support for custom location (GPS free) when using Forecast.io. In plain text!
  •  No more woeid’s when using Yahoo! Just enter your location in plain text!
  • Fixed weather icon sometimes not switching to day version.
  • Added Russian and Czech languages.
  • Fixed problem with weather not being completely hideable on Round.

Also, as always, many thanks to @rozboris for his continued help with the settings page!

DIN Time 2.50 released with support for Forecast.io

DIN Time 2.50 is available now, and it finally allows for Forecast.io as an alternate weather provider. For this to work you need to register for a free personal API key on Forecast.io. Forecast.io will be a more accurate option for a lot of users, but requires the extra step of entering the API key in the settings page.

This version has also been optimized to reduce memory usage, in preparation for the next version, which will to add more weather and health data.

DIN Time Customer feedback

It’s always refreshing to get some constructive feedback:

“Gentelmen, I am really disappointed in ur WATCHFACE right now! It used to be my favorite, and now I am considering deleting it! All you have to do to fix this problem is to charge people a few bucks a month, and the freeloaders will drop it!!! Problem solved!!! A fuming guy!!! FIX IT!!!!”

Yahoo changes its mind and celsius is working again

It looks like Yahoo decided to revert back to how its weather API worked before yesterdays change, but they broke something doing so. Temperature was only reported in Fahrenheit. A fix is out now for DIN Time, version 2.47, which converts the Fahrenheit reading to Celsius. We’re back to normal for a few weeks I guess, until Yahoo tries to do something again.

DIN Time weather not updating, again

Yahoo has made a major change to how their weather API works, so DIN Time (and probably many other watch faces and apps) can’t update the weather data. I’m looking into what can be made to get it up and running again.
